Home About Bakes Journal Visit

Everything that came out of the oven today.

Seven things, listed by name, with a green tick beside each one. This is the closest thing the shop has to a menu.

There is no printed menu at Unit 101. What there is instead is this: every so often, the shop posts the day's list, one item per line, and that is what is in the case.

On this occasion the list ran to seven:

  • Panderosa Bread
  • Cheese Pandesal
  • Original Ensaymada
  • Ube Cheese Rolls
  • Ube Spanish Rolls
  • Pande Ube
  • Sausage Rolls

Underneath it, in capitals: freshly baked goods right from the oven. Then the address along Pandora Avenue, and the phone number.

Why the list changes

Three of those seven are ube in some form, which tells you where the shop's centre of gravity sits. The others are the everyday ones, the breads people buy by the bag rather than by the piece.

Because this is a list of what came out of the oven rather than a fixed menu, it is worth treating it as a snapshot. The surest way to know what is on the shelf right now is still to call the shop, or to walk down the alley and look.
